According to the Los Angeles Times, the first privately-funded rocket has reached the edge of space. The SpaceShipOne rocket reached a height of 211,400 feet, a height normally only reached by astronauts and military pilots.
“Burt Rutan's Scaled Composites company, which built the rocket, is considered a top contender to win the X Prize, which will award $10 million to the first team to launch a three-person craft to 328,000 feet twice within two weeks by the end of 2004, the paper said.”
“The X Prize teams hope to create commercial space flights by 2020 that would cost $100,000 round-trip, the Times said.”
