A new rule passed by the FDA now requires tissue and cells to be tested for diseases before being accepted for donation. There was a lot of pressure for the law after deaths of patients due to diseased transplants. This new rule will test for a number of diseases including AIDS and SARS.

“Today's rule is focused on ensuring that tissues from suitable donors are used," said Dr. Jesse Goodman, director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research at the Food and Drug Administration.

“The new rule, the second of three rules in a package governing tissues, adds new infectious agents such as the incurable brain-wasting Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, syphilis and the bacteria that cause Chlamydia and gonorrhea.”
