According to the GAO, the DOD has not been enforcing laws for operating burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan. “The military has relied heavily on open pit burning in both conflicts, and operators of burn pits have not always followed relevant guidance to protect service members from exposure to harmful emissions,” the report states.
