The FAA is conducting fuel-tank safety tests with the cooperation of NASA. The plane being using to conduct the tests is NASA’s Boeing 747, normally used to transport the space shuttle. A fuel inerting system has been installed, which is designed to reduce the chance of an explosion inside the fuel-tank by replacing oxygen vapors with nitrogen.
