Last week politicians on both sides of the political aisle were straining muscles while trying to pat themselves on the back for the budget deal that stopped the shutdown of nonessential functions of government. Such words as "historic" were being bandied about. While the president and Congress were touting the $38.5 billion in spending cuts that were supposedly made in the budget deal, an analysis of the effects of the deal by the Congressional Budget Office found that actual spending cuts this year are, to put it mildly, a lot less significant than claimed.
