A national panel has recommended that NASA send astronauts to repair the 14-year old Hubble Space telescope. However, NASA had already abandoned the idea of sending astronauts with the crash of the Columbia shuttle and instead was in favor of having robots repair the telescope. The new recommendation by the panel to send astronauts was met with mixed results from NASA, who plan to keep both options open.

“NASA should take no actions that would preclude a space shuttle servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope," the report concludes.

"They have identified two viable ways for NASA to service Hubble, and it's my hope that NASA will find some way to keep the telescope at the scientific forefront for years to come."
