U.S. officials have approved a deal in which drug developer, CancerVax Corp., will produce three experimental cancer drugs in Havana, Cuba. This will be the first commercial deal between the United States and Cuba’s $1 billion biotechnology program which is considered one of the best in the Third World. This announcement stunned many people after President Bush tightened traveling restrictions and other aspects of the embargo with Cuba just a few weeks ago.

“CancerVax agreed to U.S. government demands to pay Cuba in food and medicine instead of cash. The State Department recommended approval of the deal, which was ultimately granted by the Treasury Department.”

“Both departments said the U.S. government is open to considering similar drug deals, but that it will continue to restrict the flow of U.S. currency to Cuba.”
