An FDA advisory panel has recommended the agency approve a new use for Eli Lilly’s cancer drug Alimta. The drug has already been approved to treat an asbestos related cancer, and is now being recommended to treat non-small cell lung caner. Lilly’s drug was seen to be less toxic than Aventis SA's drug Taxotere in some cases, but will continued to be studied before a final decision is made.
“Panelists unanimously agreed with company studies that showed Alimta patients experienced less blood-related toxicity and were hospitalized less often than those treated with the Franco-German drugmaker's Taxotere, which can cause drops in white blood cells that require hospitalization. “
“Analysts have said the new use could boost the drug's 2004 sales to about $100 million. SG Cowen analysts said they expect sales to grow to $300 million in 2008.”
