A report by a committee of the National Research Council (NRC) and Institute of Medicine has been released stating that federal regulators should monitor genetically modified foods more carefully. The report recommends that a database be created for all genetically modified foods which would list the levels of beneficial compounds as well as dangerous ones. The report stated that even though genetically modified food was a new technology, there is no evidence that it has harmed health and that biotech crops go through extensive checks before entering the marketplace.

Michael Phillips, vice president of agricultural science and regulatory policy at the Biotechnology Industry Organization, a biotech trade group, said the report should "lay to rest the few naysayers who continue to question the safety of these crops."
