The Transportation Security Administration is seeking public comment on the collection of data related to Federal and state law enforcement officers (LEOs) that fly with a loaded firearm. The purpose of the data collection is to evaluate the Flying Armed Training course, which all LEOs are required to take in order to fly armed. This collection would allow TSA to collect identifying information from LEOs who register and complete the course. At the airport an LEO would show the completion certificate to any TSA agent. Follow-up questions could be asked of the LEOs background from information the TSA contains in the database when the LEO registered for the training class. The registration information and certificate of completion would also be used to prevent unauthorized or, non-certified, LEOs from flying with a firearm unnecessarily or without training. The evaluation forms will determine whether training and certification should be an annual process.
