The Institute of Medicine, a component of the National Acdemy of Sciences, issued a report on dioxin in foods. The press has been stating that the report directs women to decrease their consumption of fatty foods. What is not made clear in the press reports is the fact that the committee that wrote the report was given a limited charge, mainly "the committee was NOT asked to offer any judgments about the risks of human exposure through foods, but rather to recommend risk-management options that would further reduce dioxin exposure among the general population and vulnerable groups until the health risks are defined".(emphasis supplied)

Consequently there was no assessment of risks, simply ways to reduce exposure.

The press states:

"This is the only practical way to reduce dioxin exposure in fetuses and breast feeding infants, which are more susceptible to the harmful effects of dioxins, the report finds. "

This is an accurate statement but misleading without a statement
of the limited charge given to the committee.
