One of the big regulatory issues in the mobile phone area is the issue of portability. What is meant by the term portability is whether a consumer can take their mobile phone number from one carrier to another when they change carriers. A related issue is whether they can take their number when they switch from land lines to a mobile carrier.

Verizion was a leader in opposing portability, in part allegedly based upon the cost. However, Verizon has changed its tune and its worh wating for.

"Verizon did an about-face this spring, dropping its opposition to local number portability, known in the industry as LNP, and saying carriers and industry regulators should make switching to another company as painless as possible for consumers.

"We thought that it was something that was going to entail new costs for the consumer, so we fought it," Hamby said.

Verizon officials changed their tune after a federal judge turned down an appeal by wireless carriers that wanted to block the FCC directive."
