08/07/03 EPA Arsenic Rule Breaking Western Small Towns
EPA issued a very controversial rule dealing with allowable levels of arsenic in drinking waters. The rule was issued after a very significant
debate over its scientific merits, with opponents stating that the agency ignored the best available science. Now small western town are having a problem footing the bill.
"During the 45-minute session, the town leaders found the senator agrees with them that arsenic and uranium limits — set by EPA for drinking water supplies — are arbitrarily low and lacking in common sense. Despite that strong, jointly-held belief, the mayors also learned it is extremely unlikely that the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives can do anything to change the regulations handed down by the Environmental Protection Agency.".
The problem is, short of a bailout, there is not much the townsfolk can do--with one exception which was not explored---filing a data quality petition.
