Michael Powell says that Sept. 11th and a series of financial scandals have made the government see telecommunication companies in a different light.

"People cry out to be protected" when they feel threatened, he said. While Congress should fix specific problems, it ought not go too far in restoring the regulations that once discouraged entrepreneurship, he said.”

Powell cited cell phones and wireless internet service, as examples of innovation brought about by de-regulation. He went on to say that he cannot predict which way hearings on media ownership may go when Congress returns to session.

“Rumors that Powell would resign increased after June 2 when he led the Republican-controlled FCC to vote 3-2 to ease decades-old restrictions on the ownership of newspapers and television and radio stations. That decision infuriated both liberals and conservatives who fear media concentration.”
