Post 9/11, there has been an increase in the security of nuclear gauges. The gauges, while normally harmless, contain small amounts of radioactive substances. The Fed says that just a little in the hands of terrorists could be deadly.
“What worries some is that in the hands of terrorists, the radioactive material -- imbedded in a device that has been a staple of the construction and road-building industries for decades could be used to make a so-called dirty bomb.”
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is now requiring the devices to have two separate safety locks. Regulators also want any mechanism containing radioactive substances to be in a secure location when it is not in use.
