The Healthy Forests Restoration Act permits the logging industry to remove potential wildfire starters from National Forests. The White House says the program is intended to protect National forests. But Environmentalists claim the bill goes too far, and will actually legalize the removal of old growth trees.
“Vaile said he thinks the bill will encourage the logging of old-growth trees - the most profitable for timber sales - but not needed brush clearing that could be threatened by fires.”
Opponents of the plan site profit as the motivation behind the Act, which is scheduled for a vote in the Senate, in October. They have been touring the country with a cutting from an on old growth tree to get the message out to the public. They’re asking voters to write their Congressmen telling them to vote no on the Bill.
“It's easy to lose sight - or not even get a picture - of what's going on out West when you're all the way across the country," he said. "This gives you an image." Vaile, 28, said the slice of tree got interesting looks as it traveled cross-country in the bed of a pickup truck.”
