Governors and premiers from New England and Canada met this week to discuss the EPA’s decision to relax emissions standards for industrial plants. The leaders are banding together to force a repeal of the plan saying exposure to toxic emissions will cause citizens health problems.

“Gov. John G. Rowland said the regulation change caught him and other governors by surprise. He said he would lobby the Bush administration to get the decision reversed. "We're working together - the premiers and governors - to eliminate the greenhouse effect as much as possible, and it's astonishing to then see what's happening at the federal level," Rowland said.”

The group wants the government to help factories and power plants with the costs of installing better emissions systems rather than allowing them to continue using outdated equipment. New England has already taken great measures to reduce pollution, but smog blowing over from the Midwest compounds the problem.

“The group tracked tiny bits of soot and ground-level ozone along the eastern United States. Maps from the study showed how the soot swirled around the midwest and into the northeast, and how high ozone levels bloomed east to New England and continued to build for days as summer temperatures rose.”
