The new rules will enable consumers to plug their cable line directly into their television, eliminating the need for a digital converter box. The FCC and the cable industry agreed on the plan back in December, but now it will be in effect.
"Lawmakers had been pressuring broadcasters, set manufacturers and the cable industry to reach a consensus on rules for digital broadcasting. "The FCC has taken another step toward ensuring the nation's smooth transition to digital television by adopting the 'plug and play' rules," said Rep. Billy Tauzin, chairman of the House Commerce Committee."
The next item on the FCC's agenda is a strategy for regulating digital broadcast reproductions. Legislators have made a hard push toward clearer regulations of the new technology, and now that everyone is in agreement T.V. manufacturers can begin producing the 'plug and play' feature sets.
