Mother Against Drunk Driving are pushing hard for government regulators to take more of an interest in underage drinking and its effects on our society. They are proposing higher alcohol taxes and cessation of federal funding to states who don’t enforce strident underage drinking guidelines.
“This is a complex challenge ... to reduce and prevent underage drinking in a society in which drinking is common among adults,” Richard J. Bonnie, chairman of the committee that prepared the new report for the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council, said Tuesday.”
MADD is also asking the government to step up efforts to decrease underage drinking, including better identification, and undercover ops to put an end to drinking parties. In addition they are demanding tighter advertising regulations that would ban advertising to minors.
“Wendy J. Hamilton, national president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, said the report “gives us hope that underage drinking prevention finally will have a place on the nation’s public policy and public health agenda.”
