A federal study group found that new regulations on the amount of soot in the air are not favorable for older citizens or those with respiratory difficulties. The EPA scientists are advocating a plan to crack down on soot producing machines and factories. This finding goes hand in hand with recent efforts to relax Clean Air Act standards.

“Furthermore, the paper says, in many cases these studies showed adverse health effects when airborne soot concentrations were well below the maximum allowed by the 1997 standard, particularly during days when the air is especially dirty.”

While Administrators say that no new regulations will be imposed due to the report, they will submit a recommendation to the executive office once their study has been independently reviewed.

“This represents the best judgment of the EPA staff in their interpretation of the science," said Deborah Shprentz, a consultant for the American Lung Association. She said it reflects that numerous studies support aggressive actions to curtail this type of air pollution.”
