Residents living near two Massachusetts airports are concerned that tree removal in areas surrounding the airports will have a significant impact on the landscape and wildlife. Over 60 residents have already petitioned their Congressman to press for EPA intervention to stop the project.
“The letter stated residents fear the tree cutting will result in flooding and erosion, an unsafe situation for property owners, unbearable noise pollution, devastation of the wildlife habitat, and significant loss of property value.”
The trees are scheduled to be removed as part of a major overhaul to bring both airports into compliance with FAA airspace clearance rules. At this stage, Williamstown is asking for a letter from the airport commission that states there will be no environmental or property damage after the trees are gone.
“One-page letter signed by 60 neighborhood residents asked Olver to convince the airport commission to suspend cutting trees until "an environmental impact assessment can be done and all other reasonable alternatives can be evaluated." The letter was faxed and sent to Olver Sept. 11."
