OMB/GAO POLICY STATEMENTS
GAO Recommends OMB Help Fund Long-Term Efficiency Initiatives
The Office of Management and Budget should do more to help federal agencies cover the upfront costs associated with projects that will improve efficiency and save money in the long run, the Government Accountability Office recommended in a new report. The report, which gives agencies advice on streamlining operations in response to budget pressure and a 2010 performance management law, recommended that the OMB director "work with Congress and federal agencies to develop proposals for funding mechanisms" that will assist "longer-term efficiency improvement projects." GAO noted that, if handled correctly, such investments would pay off with savings greater than or equal to the amount of initial funding.
