Closing Data Centers Yields Smaller Payoff
The Office of Management and Budget has said agencies will save $3 billion by 2015 by closing more than 800 data centers. The reality appears to be quite different. The high costs of shutting and consolidating data centers, lower-than-expected near-term savings, and delays caused by tight budgets are likely to whittle savings to a small fraction of that estimate, agencies are reporting in newly revised data center plans. OMB said agencies are reporting they will save a combined $630 million by 2015 — roughly one-fifth of OMB's savings estimate.
