Iceland Resumes Commercial Whaling
Iceland announced that it will resume commercial whaling, despite the moratorium monitored by the International Whaling Commission. Icelandic representatives are reported to say that their decision to resume commercial whaling in part results from the IWC's inability to develop a commercial whaling regulatory scheme. Commercial whaling is reported to be of little economic value to Iceland, but of significant cultural and historical importance. The impact of Iceland's decision on the continuing viability of the IWC and the moratorium is not yet known.
