NGOs Sue Over Arctic Seismic Permits
On May 5, 2008, several NGOs including NRDC and some Alaskan indigenous people's groups filed a complaint in Alaska federal district court. Their complaint alleges that the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Minerals Management Service violated the National Environmental Policy Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act when they issued permits authorizing oil and gas seismic surveys during the summer and fall of 2008 in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas.
When they filed their complaint, the plaintiffs also filed a motion for preliminary injunction and a motion for expedited consideration by the court.
As of the date this article was posted, the federal government had not yet responded to the complaint and motions.
