MMC Announces Scientific Advisors Meeting and Publishes New Sound Report
The annual meeting of the Marine Mammal Commission and its Committee of Scientific Advisors on Marine Mammals will take place from 9 - 11 AM, December 2008, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The agenda for this meeting is not yet available, but MMC's website states that portions of the meeting will focus on marine mammal issues in the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and Atlantic coast off the southeastern United States.

The MMC has also published a new report about acoustic effects on marine mammals. The report is entitled Underwater Sound and the Marine Mammal Acoustic Environment: A Guide to Fundamental Principles, by David L. Bradley and Richard Stern, is now available for download at http://www.mmc.gov/reports/workshop/. The Executive Summary of this report explains, "To promote more informed discussion and more effective management of sound-producing activities, the Marine Mammal Commission asked the Acoustical Society of America to prepare a primer on sound in the marine environment. This document is that primer."
