Scripps/NSF Apply for Northeast Pacific Seismic Permit
On May 26 2009, the U. S. National Marine Fisheries Service publicly announced that NMFS has received an application from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography for an Incidental Harassment Authorization to take small numbers of marine mammals, by Level B harassment only, incidental to conducting a marine seismic survey. Pursuant to the Marine Mammal Protection Act, NMFS requests comments on its proposed issuance of this IHA.

Scripps proposes to conduct this low-energy marine seismic survey in the Northeast Pacific Ocean during July 2009. The survey will be conducted under cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation, and NSF will provide funding for the survey. The proposed survey will occur in an overall area between approximately 44° and 45° N. and 124.5° and 126° W., within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the U.S. The survey is scheduled to occur from July 14–20, 2009.

The survey will use a single Generator Injector airgun with a discharge volume of 45 in3. The proposed survey is virtually identical to one conducted by Scripps in 2007 under an IHA issued by NMFS in September 2007.

NMFS requests that it receive any public comment on this IHA by June 25, 2009.
