MMS Schedules Public Hearings for OCS EIS Scoping
The U.S. Minerals Management Service will perform an Environmental Impact Statement for its proposed offer of all or portions of eight Outer Continental Shelf planning areas for oil and gas leasing. These areas include the Beaufort Sea, Chukchi Sea, and Cook Inlet off the coast of Alaska; the Western, Central and a portion of the Eastern Gulf of Mexico; and the South and Mid-Atlantic. The lease sales in question would be for the period 2012-2017.

On April 2, 2010, MMS issued a press release that announced public meetings on scoping for this EIS. The meetings will be held in June 2010 at the following locations:

  • Kaktovik, Alaska

  • Nuiqsut, Alaska

  • Barrow, Alaska

  • Anchorage, Alaska

  • New Orleans, Louisiana

  • Mobile, Alabama

  • Tallahassee, Florida

  • Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida

  • Savannah, Georgia and/or Wilmington, North Carolina

  • Norfolk, Virginia

  • Trenton, New Jersey and/or Wilmington, Delaware

  • Washington, DC

A final schedule for these meetings will be posted at www.mms.gov and in the Federal Register. Among other issues, during its EIS scoping MMS will consider these lease sales' effects, if any, on marine mammals.
