CRE Files Comments on BOEMRE's EIS Scoping
On March 28, 2011, the Center for Regulatory Effectiveness filed written comment on BOEMRE?s scoping for its Multisale Environmental Impact Statement on 2012-2017 oil and gas leasing in the Gulf of Mexico. CRE's comments focused on the regulation of effects on marine mammals from oil and gas seismic operations in the GoM. CRE took the position that current regulation is adequate to protect GoM marine mammals from seismic, and that additional, more stringent regulation is unnecessary. In partial support of its position, CRE cited NMFS' recent statement that

"To date, there is no evidence that serious injury, death, or stranding by marine mammals can occur from exposure to airgun pulses, even in the case of large airgun arrays."
