BOEMRE Submits Revised Application for Seismic Marine Mammal Takes in the Gulf of Mexico
On June 14, 2011, NMFS published a Federal Register notice that BOEMRE has sent NMFS a revised application for Incidental Take regulations governing oil and gas seismic surveys in the Gulf of Mexico and their effects (if any) on marine mammals.

These regulations would be issued by NMFS under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. There are currently no NMFS take authorizations under the MMPA for oil and gas seismic in the GoM.

Comments on the revised BOEMRE application are due to NMFS by July 14, 2011.

The actual revised BOEMRE application and its appendices are available online at http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/pdfs/permits/boemre_application2011.pdf. BOEMRE initially submitted a take rules request to NMFS in 2002. NMFS noticed it for comment in 2003. BOEMRE submitted a revised application in 2003. NMFS has been preparing an Environmental Impact Statement for the applications since at least 2004.

The currently revised application states that it "cover[s] new information that has become available since submission of the 2002 original and 2004 request packages."
