L-DEO Seeks IHA for Seismic in the Central Pacific
The U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service has received an application from Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, a part of Columbia University, for an Incidental Harassment Authorization to take marine mammals incidental to conducting a marine geophysical survey in the central Pacific. This survey is scheduled to take place during November through December, 2011. L-DEO has requested this IHA pursuant to NMFS' authority under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The requested IHA would authorize takings, by Level B harassment only, of 20 species of marine mammals during the specified activity. NMFS must receive public comment on the IHA no later than October 19, 2011.
