NMFS Issues Sonar LOA for Parts of Gulf of Mexico
On February 17, 2012, the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service published Federal Register notice that NMFS has issued a one-year Letter of Authorization, followed by a revised LOA that is valid for two years, to take marine mammals by harassment incidental to the U.S. Navy's Research, Development, Test and Evaluation mission activities at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City, Florida. This LOA is issued pursuant to NMFS' authority under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act. This LOA is issued in accordance with the MMPA regulations that NMFS issued on January 21, 2010, 75 FR 3395, available online. These regulations apply to the Navy's use of sonar and other Navy activities in areas of the Gulf of Mexico.
