Cell Phone Tower Health and Safety Issues on Agenda at NIOSH Board of Scientific Counselors Meeting March 10.

The Board of Scientific Counselors (BSC) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) will meet on March 10, 2000 to provide advice to the agency on its research activities. (See the Federal Register on this topic) Topics for discussion will include:

  • Report from the NIOSH Director
  • Responding to Emerging Safety Hazards: Telecommunications Towers
    (Including cell phone base stations)
  • HIV Program Activities
  • Hazard Surveillance Planning
  • Intramural NORA Program Initiatives: Asthma, Dermal, Musculoskeletal
  • Division of Applied Research and Technology: The Re-Unification of Division of Biomedical and Behavioral Science and Division of Physical Sciences and Engineering
  • Future BSC Activities

Interested stakeholders and the public are encouraged to attend this meeting and to follow this hazard research closely. Adverse NIOSH findings could quickly raise fears among the general public, particularly with respect to telecommunication towers, and could ultimately lead to additional federal, state, and local regulations. It is thus imperative that the quality of this research be assured, and CRE strongly encourages open communication between NIOSH and interested stakeholders. (See the CRE Federal Governtment Links Directory for a complete listing of all NIOSH offices).
