Ramadan Brothers Remain In Custody After Hearing

OCEAN CITY — Two local residents indicted by a New York grand jury in May for allegedly being the ringleader and enterprise treasurer of a vast cigarette smuggling and money laundering operation remain behind bars this week after preliminary hearings in King’s County New York Supreme Court on Monday.

A gang of Retford smugglers, who described their tobacco as ‘wet, mouldy and smells like manure, but sells because it’s cheap’, is behind bars after HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) smashed their £26 million criminal operation.
The plot, which flooded the north of England with more than 150 million cigarettes and two tonnes of low quality tobacco, was masterminded by Doncaster men Daniel Harty and Billy-Jo Wall.
They were aided by brothers William and Samual Tomlinson, Ben Kirk, Peter Lawrence and Jonathan Ellis all from Retford and John Sabin from Doncaster after they smuggled cigarettes and tobacco into the UK.

OCEAN CITY, Md.- Beth Hall, of Ocean City, helps out at the Smoke Ring in Ocean City. Smoke Ring is a beach-area tobacco shop that is owned and operated by locals. But Hall believes staying in business is tough.
“We’re actually trying to stay alive. You know we are trying to stay alive and in business. It’s very difficult.”
That’s because Hall believes “crooks” make it hard for “honest” businesses, like Smoke Ring, to make money.
