Man Arrested With Untaxed Cigarettes and $18K, Investigators Say

More than $18,000 and 183 cartons of contraband cigarettes were seized during an investigation.

FLUSHING, QUEENS — A man was arrested with nearly 200 cartons of untaxed cigarettes and $18,000 in cash, investigators said.

Flushing resident Minyan Zhu, 30, was arrested on March 22 after a joint investigation by the city’s Department for Taxation and Finance, the district attorney’s Office and other law enforcement officials.

Traffic stop leads to biggest seizure of untaxed tobacco products in MN history: More than $74,000 in tobacco taxes should have been paid

The Minnesota Department of Revenue announced that the Washington County Attorney’s Office recently charged Mohammad A.M. Abdul Majid and Iman Gencehan Ugurlu, both from Bridgeview, IL, with one count each of felony aiding and abetting possession of untaxed tobacco products and one count each of felony aiding and abetting aggravated forgery.

Observing several commercial motor vehicle violations, the complaint states that the trooper escorted the vehicle to the nearest weight station where a commercial vehicle inspector could safely perform an inspection of the truck. The men revealed that the truck was carrying tobacco products and they reportedly provided an invoice for their shipment to the trooper. Neither the distributor, Statewide Distributors Inc., nor the wholesaler, Hudson Wholesale LLC, were found to exist at the addresses listed on the invoice, according to the complaint.

Counterfeit tobacco and cigarettes sold on Facebook

Counterfeit cigarettes and tobacco are being advertised and sold through Facebook, an investigation has found.

Consignments made out to be genuine brands are being sold by people using fake profiles on buy and sell pages for the south-east of England.

Cheap tobacco purchased by BBC South East was found to contain double the lead content and a third more cadmium than genuine products.

Network of hashish and counterfeit tobacco smugglers dismantled

7 individuals have been arrested in a joint operation carried out by the Polish Police in cooperation with the Spanish National Police and with the support of Europol. The organised crime group (OCG) was involved in smuggling large quantities of hashish from Spain to Poland and the illicit manufacturing of tobacco products.

The operation resulted in the seizure and dismantlement of:

  • More than 200 kilograms of hashish worth PLZ 3,2 million (equivalent of approximately EUR 757 000);
  • 15,5 tonnes of tobacco;
  • Two illegal cigarette production lines dismantled in Poland and Spain.

Australian Border Force officers hit illegal tobacco syndicate in dawn raid

A MAN was arrested by the Australian Border Force after a dawn raid to hit a syndicate responsible for importing illegal tobacco into the country.

Zisheng Yang, 29, was arrested about 10am on Wednesday after border force officers arrived at a high-rise apartment building off Little Bourke and King streets at 6am.
