Instances ‘costing legitimate retailers and wholesalers billions of dollars in sales’

NEW YORK — New York’s high taxes on tobacco products have led to an explosion in cigarette smuggling, according to a national survey by the Tax Foundation. And it’s taking a toll on retailers.

“What’s going on now is costing legitimate licensed retailers and wholesalers billions of dollars in sales,” James Calvin, director of the New York State Association of Convenience Stores, told The (Oneonta, N.Y.) Daily Star.

New York State releases 2017 results for crackdown on illegal tobacco

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says a special task force created to crack down on illegal tobacco has seized more than $6 million worth of contraband cigarettes and cigars this year.

The Democrat announced Tuesday that the $6.6 million seized in 2017 is $1 million more than what authorities hauled in last year.

The Belize Police Department says that it is looking into a report of an alleged contraband cigarette smuggling ring, originating in Belize and branching out to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

At the scheduled press briefing on Thursday, the Department said that officials are inquiring into a report made by the Guatemalan media house, Guatevision, that millions of contraband cigarettes are bought in Belize and smuggled by boat to Puerto Barrios, avoiding customs officials.
