US court fines UPS $247 million over illegal cigarette shipments

A federal judge ordered United Parcel Service Inc to pay nearly $247 million in damages and penalties for “illegally shipping” large volumes of untaxed cigarettes in New York state and City, a court filing showed on Thursday.

UPS said it was extremely disappointed with the court’s ruling and would appeal the decision.

Illegal tobacco tainted by asbestos and rats

One in eight retailers in London is selling illegal tobacco products, undercover research has found.

As smoking laws are tightened on Saturday, more people could start buying illicit products, Japan Tobacco International says. It found that about 32 per cent of roll-your-own tobacco and 13 per cent of cigarettes in Britain are sold illegally.
