ST. LOUIS • Fourteen people have been indicted on federal charges and accused of a “large-scale,” multi-million dollar conspiracy to smuggle cigarettes from low tax states like Missouri to states where taxes are many times higher.
The alleged conspirators bought the cigarettes in Georgia and Missouri and took them to New York, prosecutors said. There combined state and local taxes of $5.85 a pack dwarf the 22 to 24 cents buyers pay in St. Louis city and county, they said.
