CRE Exploratory Committee: Update

As a result of the CRE white paper, Market Driven Consortia, Implications forthe FCC's Cable Access Proceeding, CRE established an Exploratory Committee to assess process options for developing open cable platform standards. Specifically, the Exploratory Committee will develop recommendations as to whether standars for broadband internet-cable connections should be established through a standards development organization (SDO) or through a market-driven consortia (MDC).

The Exploratory Committee is drafting a paper which will explore the pros and cons of each methond of standards development as they apply to the specific issues, technical and policy, which need to be considered in developing connection standards. Based on this detailed analysis, the paper will draw broader conclusions as to the recommended mechanism for developing the interconnection standards

The CRE Exploratory Committee includes: a major regional/global communications company; a major telecommunications trade associate representing a broad spectrum of service and equipment providers; and a major internet access provider.

CRE will be providing regular updates on the Exploratory Committee's work, as well as the opportunity to comment on draft work products.
