Locks and Dam 26 Replacement Act

Locks and Dam 26 Replacement Act(42 U.S.C. 4041-4042; 33 U.S.C. 1801-1804; 26 U.S.C. 4041-4042; P.L. 95-502, October 21, 1978; 92 Stat. 1693) -- This authorization was enacted as title I of P.L. 95-502, which amended the 1954 Internal Revenue Code. It authorizes the Army Corps of Engineers to replace Locks and Dam 26 on the Mississippi River at Alton, Illinois, and to replace terrestrial wildlife habitat inundated by the construction on an acre-for-acre basis in Illinois and Missouri.

It also directed preparation of a comprehensive master plan for management of the Upper Mississippi River Basin System by 1982 and prohibited the Corps from acting to increase the navigation capacity of that system until the plan is completed. In addition, Federal agencies are prohibited from studying the feasibility of deepening the navigation channels in the Mississippi River unless specifically authorized by Congress.
