Unfortunately, moving an industrial IoT network to wireless can be a daunting task. “There are a lot of challenges,” said Rick Candell, an electronics engineer for the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Candell is the principal author of NIST’s new ebook, “Guide to Industrial Wireless Systems Deployment.” The publication is considered a science-based set of guidelines for taking your factory floor wireless.

OMB slams agencies on cyber risk, calls for ‘bold’ new approaches

Nearly three quarters of 96 agencies reviewed by federal officials have cybersecurity programs that are either “at risk” or at “high risk,” meaning “bold approaches” are needed to secure federal networks, according to the Office of Management and Budget.

Risk assessments carried out by OMB show that a lack of threat information available to agencies “results in ineffective allocations” of their limited budgets, the White House-based agency said in a reportreleased last week. “This situation creates enterprise-wide gaps in network visibility, IT tool and capability standardization, and common operating procedures, all of which negatively impact federal cybersecurity.”

OPM Mulls Direct Hire Authority for STEM, Cyber Posts

The Office of Personnel Management is considering the issuance of direct hire authority in efforts to fill government positions related to science, technology, engineering, math and cybersecurity.

OPM said in a memo published Wednesday it will distribute a survey to chief human capital officers in the coming weeks as part of efforts to gather additional data on agencies’ recruitment process for STEM and cyber roles.
