FBI Names Joseph Demarest Cyber Division Head; Announces Series Of Moves

The FBI has appointed 24-year veteran Joseph Demarest to lead the bureau’s cyber division as an assistant director, the bureau announced Monday.

He has served as assistant director for international operations since 2010 and will be succeeded in that capacity by Deputy Assistant Director Michael Welch, currently at the cyber division.

James Burrell, section chief of the cyber division, was appointed deputy assistant director of the cyber division.

Demarest joined the bureau as a special agent in 1988 and served in the Anchorage and New York field offices, where he investigated white-collar crime, violent crime, counterintelligence and drug cases.

In 2002, he joined the counterterrorism division and was later promoted to unit chief and then acting section chief in the international terrorism operations section.

He returned to New York in 2005, where he held management roles in the international terrorism branch and eventually became special agent in charge for counterterrorism.

Later, he was promoted to a ssistant director in charge of that office, where he created the New York field office’s cyber branch.
