State Minister for Home Shamsul Hoque Tuku has said that the government is forming a ‘monitoring cell’ to prevent cyber crime in the country as well as to monitor harmful content on the internet in the wake of ‘growing concerns’ over spreading of militant activities and false propagandas through internet.

“The people are apprehensive about cyber crime. False propagandas are being spread through cyber space. Even attempts were made to instigate communal violence,” he said.

The junior home minister said that the cell would work round the clock to help identify the offenders as soon as possible to bring them to justice.

Tuku said a separate meeting would also be convened to discuss how technology could be used for the functioning of the cell.

Officials of the Ministries of Information, Post and Telecommunications, and telecom regulatory body Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) will attend the meeting.

As a part of the initiative to curb cyber crime, Tuku said that the government would encourage the banks and other financial institutions to make anti-militant films or advertisements and to publish books on the similar subjects under their Corporate Social responsibility (CSR) programmes.

In this regard, the government would take necessary measures, including brining an amendment to the ‘CSR Policy’.

The junior home minister said that each of the district administrations, the Ministry of Information and the Islamic Foundation were carrying out anti-militancy campaign.

“A social awareness is being raised to curb militancy.” Tuku claimed that through different activities the last government had patronised militancy in the country.

Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Home Main Uddin Khandaker, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology Kamal Uddin Ahmed and high officials of the law enforcing agencies attended the meeting.
