MEESEC Forum 2013 focuses on energy geo-politics, security operations management, cyber security and maritime security within oil, gas and petrochemical industries.

Constant changes in energy dependence is also changing the dynamics in energy security. Highlighting the latest strategies and technologies to effectively mitigate threats, the 9th Middle East Energy Security (MEESEC) Forum commenced today at Habtoor Grand Beach Resort and Spa, Dubai. Chairing the conference today is Robin Mills, Energy Strategist and Economist and author of ‘The Myth of the Oil Crisis’.
The forum kicked-off with a panel on Mixing Oil and Politics and the increasing risk to global energy supplies. Panelists discussed and debated on energy geopolitics, threats to critical energy infrastructure and holistic mitigation strategies that help prepare for contingencies. Shifting focus on security architecture and operations management, the delegates heard from Zsolt Zolyomi, Director of Corporate Security at MOL and Scott Chapel, Vice President – Corporate Security at TAQA. Zolyomi’s session focused on setting organizational governance and
implementation of security procedures whilst Chapel highlighted on implementing security requirements with EPC contractors and security auditing during construction.
The attendees also heard from William Matola, Program Director at Raytheon Missile Systems on Raytheon’s Peregryn Protection Systems designed to solve defense needs. Another key session also focused on cyber security. Addressing on cyber attacks, their defense systems and cyber security for the energy sector were Ernest Hilbert at Kroll and Rob Kraanen of AlertEnterprise (a SAP partner). Both Raytheon and Kroll are Silver Sponsors and SAP an associate sponsor to the event.
Post luncheon, the forum will continue its highlight on cyber security with topics ranging from issues and updates on SCADA systems to the emerging nature of cyber threats in
the energy sector and a holistic cyber security management. Speakers representation will be from ADCO, Vira Realtime, ADMA-OPCO and aeCERT. A workshop on cyber security and SCADA systems will also be conducted on the last day of the forum.
Tomorrow, day two of the forum will majorly focus on Maritime Security. Chairman and key speaker scheduled to speak is Captain Pottengal Mukundan, Director – International Maritime Bureau. Capt. Mukundan is scheduled to address the attendees on the current hotspots of maritime piracy with focus on recent experiences in Somalia and Gulf of Guinea. Panel on building framework for enhanced maritime security cooperation and awareness will also be discussed. Other dignitaries speaking tomorrow are Keith Tupman (Kuwait
Oil Company) and Nasser Al Buhairi (OSSC) from Kuwait.
The last and final day of the forum will consist of three hands on workshop sessions. Starting the day on Business Continuity Management to protect operations is John Cowling, Vice Chairman at ASIS International and John Bartlet from Control Risks. Sam Botros Regional Director and Crisis Management at GE (Oil and Gas) will conduct a workshop on preparing for a counter-terrorism threat response plan.
The 9th Middle East forum aims to bring experts to examine the security landscape within the energy sector and demonstrate inventive approaches towards physical security management, risk mitigation, intelligence strategies and operational security. The forum is supported by Security Association for the Maritime Industry (SAMI), International Professional Security Association (IPSA) and Information Systems Security Association – Egypt Chapter.
