65+ In The United States: 2005 (Bureau of Census)
The Census Bureau has published an encyclopedic study on the economic and legal state of Senior Citizens in the US. The agency presents the facts and let's each reader draw their own conclusions. Data on page 109 is particularly informative: median net worth for the 65+ group is $ 108,000, including the price of their home; median net worth of people in the 45 to 54 age group is $ 83,000.

With pensions decreasing, Medicare cost increasing, social security uncertain and net savings at or below zero, we find it difficult to agree that the underlying data support the conclusion of most "boomers" to be optimistic about retirement. A more likely option is that boomers are misinformed about the economic realities they face.
