UWA’s Centre for Integrated Bee Research director Dr Boris Baer says honeybee seminal fluid is highly efficient at killing the spores of a common fungal pathogen, Nosema apis.

Later down the line, they hope this research could help breed more tolerance to one of the Australian industry’s most feared pests.

BORIS BAER: The most notorious and famous one for example is the Varroa mite, we already have initiated research in that area to kind of find bees that have natural levels of tolerance and use the approaches we use here in the long term to safe-guard bees and their pollination services.
