NMFS Publishes Proposed List of Fisheries for 2007
The Marine Mammal Protection Act requires the National Marine Fisheries Service to publish each year a List of Fisheries, focusing on interactions between fisheries and marine mammals. The NMFS List places each commercial fishery into one of three categories based on level of serious injury and mortality of marine mammals that occurs incidental to each fishery. The fisheries’ categorization determines whether they are subject to specified regulatory requirements, such as registration, observer coverage, and take reduction plans.
The NMFS requests public comment by January 17, 2007, on its proposed List of Fisheries.
