NAS Publishes Its EPA Models Report
On June 14, 2007, the National Research Council of the National Academies of Science published its report entitled Models in Environmental Regulatory Decision Making. This NRC report was commissioned by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The US Department of Transportation contributed part of the funding for the report.
The report states its purposes as follows:
"The task undertaken by this committee for the National Academies was to assess evolving scientific and technical issues related to the development, selection, and
use of computational and statistical models in the regulatory process at EPA. In this report, the committee provides advice concerning management, evaluation, and use of models at the agency."
The report praises EPA for the work that it's done to date on models, especially the Agency's Council for Regulatory Environmental Modeling. The report also makes several recommendations for improving EPA's development and use of models. These recommendations include institutionalized and continuing review of models EPA uses for regulatory purposes. The report notes that this continuing review process would help EPA meet the requirements of the Data Quality Act.
This is a very important report that should be read by all stakeholders, including other agencies.
