Feds Launch Data.Gov and Guarantee Its Compliance with Information Quality Act
The U.S. federal government has launched a new website called Data.gov, http://www.data.gov/. This new website explains that
The purpose of Data.gov is to increase public access to high value, machine readable datasets generated by the Executive Branch of the Federal Government.

“As a priority Open Government Initiative for President Obama's administration, Data.gov increases the ability of the public to easily find, download, and use datasets that are generated and held by the Federal Government. Data.gov provides descriptions of the Federal datasets (metadata), information about how to access the datasets, and tools that leverage government datasets. The data catalogs will continue to grow as datasets are added. Federal, Executive Branch data are included in the first version of Data.gov.”
The Government guarantees that the contents of Data.gov will comply with the requirements of the Information Quality Act. For example, in its Glossary of Terms, http://www.data.gov/glossary, the site defines its Data Quality standards by reference to the Information Quality Act:

Data Quality (source: OMB Guidelines
for Ensuring and Maximizing the Quality, Objectivity, Utility, and Integrity of Information Disseminated by Federal Agencies, 67 FR 8452)”
“‘Quality’ is an encompassing term comprising objectivity, utility, and integrity. Sometimes these terms are referred to collectively as "quality." Any agency contributing a dataset to Data.gov must certify that the dataset conforms to the agency's information quality guidelines.”

Similarly, in its Data Policy section, http://www.data.gov/datapolicy, Data.gov explains that “All information accessed through Data.gov is subject to the Information Quality Act (P.L. 106-554). For all data accessed through Data.gov, each agency has confirmed that the data being provided through this site meets the agency's Information Quality Guidelines.”

CRE applauds the government for creating this site dedicated to data excellence and availability.
