NMFS Seeks Comment on Seismic Permits
The National Marine Fisheries Service asks for public comment on two requests for incidental take authorizations for marine mammals. The requests are filed by ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc, and Union Oil Company of California. If granted, the requests would authorize the two companies' seismic operations in portions of Cook Inlet, Alaska. The five affected marine mammal species are

  • Cook Inlet beluga whales
  • Steller lions
  • Pacific harbor seals
  • Harbor porpoises and
  • Killer whales.
The NMFS proposes to grant the requested authorizations subject to specified mitigation requirements.

Comments are due to NMFS by February 5, 2007.
